President’s Message

Kevin Hohnbaum
AMA President
|
|
I’m a note taker. Any time I’m at an event or listening to someone talk, you’ll probably notice me writing things down. If you saw my desk, you’d see a 4-inch stack of paper scraps, brochures, event programs and napkins next to my inbox. My inbox holds all of the secrets of the world that I’ve learned in the past few years. I was rereading some of my notes a few weeks ago (All the notes in the world do little good if they aren’t read!) when I found one from a Beaverton Chamber of Commerce luncheon held in February 2001. The speaker fascinated me with her thoughts on the importance of marketing in today’s world. As I reviewed my notes, I realized that most of the information is pertinent today and that many of the ideas mirror my department’s current marketing programs. I was surprised to see that the speaker was AMA Oregon’s very own board historian, Lisa Olson. I’m sure that Lisa never knew the impact that her thoughts and ideas had on me or that her great enthusiasm for the AMA motivated me to become involved. What a difference one person can unknowingly have on another!
Who have you shared your enthusiasm with today? What are you passionate about and do other folks know? If you’re ready to share some of your energy for marketing and for serving others, please give me a call at 503-546-9811 or drop me a note at Khohnbaum@PortlandTribune.com. You, too, can make a difference in marketing and in our world.

Joanne Lazo, Western Culinary Institute
|
|
New Member Profile
As marketing director for Western Culinary Institute (WCI) in downtown Portland, Joanne Lazo doesn’t spend every day munching on fresh fruit tartes or plantaine and pecan cupcakes at the Café Bleu, but she does admit they’re some of her favorite perks in championing the Le Cordon Bleu brand of culinary arts and hospitality education education.
You have to have a lot of self-control to work here,” she says, referring especially to days such as a recent executive board dinner for Le Cordon Bleu President Andre Cointreau, when staff dined on butternut squash soup, galantine of duck, coffee and cocoa-crusted venison, and Venezuelan molten chocolate cake. Joanne enjoys these types of events because they showcase the kind of career opportunities graduates of a Le Cordon Bleu program can look forward to.

Marketing Moments
A recent book, "Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master " (Wharton, 2006), claims that there are over 50 metrics every executive should master. Faced with such a daunting number, most marketers are likely to want to know which of the 50 are critical, and which are merely nice to know.
