Forward '07
AMA Annual Conference

The day started off with networking over coffee and light food in the all-green built Portland Armory.

Ray Anderson’s story of industrialist-turned-environmentalist was insightful and inspiring. Ray’s role as “green” visionary came late in his career—at age 61 he realized corporations like his held the power to lead by example to reduce destruction of the earth’s environment. Ray challenged marketers to look beyond the immediate ROMI and consider alternatives to the status quo.

The panel was introduced by Dr Marshall from PSU’s School of Business Administration. The lively discussion included representatives from Flexcar, Nau, gDiapers, and New Seasons. Panelists shared marketing and customer relations strategies in their “green” markets. Regardless of the size of the company represented, each had successes, as well as challenges in reaching their target audience. Surprisingly, new emerging “green” consumers are found in groups that are not considered traditionally environmentally-concerned, such as conservative Christian communities and lower/middle income groups.

Lunch was served in the upper and lower levels of the Armory venue. Attendees had the opportunity to network with panelists and speakers.

Kevin Carroll’s passionate presentation was the perfect sequel to the morning’s discussions. Kevin’s amazing story focused on individual sustainability—how each person can maintain the motivation and creativity it takes to produce consistent service and work in a bottom-line world. Kevin shared books, CDs, and other resources with the audience—and he gave away a number of the now famous Red Rubber Balls.

President’s Message

Wow! What an incredible AMA year this has been! The lunch programs have been insightful and motivating; the professional development workshops moved to a new time and place adding a new focus on hands-on training; the networking has expanded to include the PRSA, PAF and AIGA; our Outreach committee completed projects for eight local non profits; our annual Marketer of Excellence award (MAX) rose to a new height with an exciting stand-alone event and the content and professional production of our annual conference made it one of the best conferences I’ve ever experienced.  Improvements in AMA Oregon’s communications and website are high on the list of accomplishments and our sponsorship efforts have never been more organized. Our membership has continued to grow this year and we started a student chapter at OSU and strengthened our ties with the PSU chapter.

As my term as president of AMA Oregon winds down to a finish on June 30, I’ve had many people ask me if I’m glad to be almost finished. I can honestly answer NO! It’s been a blessing to work with a dynamic group of folks who genuinely enjoy sharing their time and energy while they experience their own personal and professional growth. And I have learned waaaaay more this year then I expected—about managing non-profits, about creating and following a business plan, about relationships, about running meetings and keeping them interesting, about motivating people, about marketing and public relations, and about myself. Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way this year and thank you to an unbelievably energetic AMA board that keeps pushing us to better serve our members.

Whether you’re a long-time AMA member, an occasional event attendee or getting ready to step into a volunteer role, I have to warn you—fasten your seat belts!  This has been a great year for AMA Oregon but Eric Gregg, Chylon Pappas, and next year’s board are going to knock your socks off!

It's a difficult thing but the good news is there's an easy way to do it. Attend this professional development session to learn new tools on getting to the point.

JetBlue: Managing Crisis Communications with “Flying” Colors

Featuring: Sonja Hagen, West Coast Marketing Manager, Jet Blue

Time and Location
11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.
The Benson Hotel
309 SE Broadway Portland, OR 97205

The Topic:
JetBlue certainly isn’t the only airline to have suffered a major mishap with customer service recently. However, after the February storm that left JetBlue customers stranded on runways for hours, the company spent a fair amount of time under the media spotlight. Interestingly enough, though, this attention wasn’t just due to the incident itself, but rather the masterful way JetBlue handled itself during the following weeks. JetBlue executives were quick to acknowledge the airline’s mistakes and even went so far as to pen a “Customer Bill of Rights.” The result? JetBlue has managed to quickly bounce back from a crisis that would have crippled most other companies.

Join Sonja Hagen, JetBlue’s West Coast Marketing Manager, for a lively discussion of JetBlue’s handling of the crisis and walk away with valuable tips on how you too can rebound from even the most damaging of incidents.
