Meet Cyndi Johnson

February Volunteer of the Month

We are excited to introduce February's Volunteer of the Month, Cyndi Johnson. Cyndi has been making significant contributions to the Community Outreach program.  We're delighted to have her support!

She volunteers as a Project Manager for Girls, Inc of Northwest Oregon. The project centers around getting more public exposure for the organization's programs through an effective PR campaign. Girls, Inc is a chapter of a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.  Cyndi will be chairing her first project meeting in early this month. 

Cyndi moved to the Portland area in September of 2007.  She quickly got involved in our marketing community, first starting a promotional marketing company, Foot in the Door Promotions. She also works in a business development role for Premier Press. Cyndi joined the AMA because she had such a great experience with the Austin chapter.   She knew that the AMA was the best source for both networking and educational opportunities. Volunteering with our Community Outreach Program is a new challenge for Cyndi and she hopes that her experience in both sales and marketing will be of value to our non profit partners.

The idea of developing and telling your brand story is not new.
What is fascinating to me is how few
do it well and, how compelling the story must be to
be apprehended in today’s environment of highly fragmented marketing channels and technologies.   

 

President’s Message

Think of the last time you heard a great story. 
I mean a truly great story.  Even if you have to think back a few days, or perhaps a few weeks, you almost certainly remember a great deal of detail.  What was the gist of the story?  Who were the protagonists?  What caused the tension and how did the lead handle the situation?  What was the outcome?

Now, the idea of developing and telling your brand story is not new.  Many have discussed it (Bruce Tait, Mark Thomson, Ryan Mathews, etc.).  Others have used their story effectively to market (New Seasons, Coca-Cola, and Nau to name a few).  What is fascinating to me is how few do it well and, how compelling the story must be to be apprehended in today’s environment of highly fragmented marketing channels and technologies.  The evolution of marketing continues to push us to find new ways to tell our story in a way that captures the interest and emotion of our target audience.

This year’s AMA Marketing Excellence Awards event, on February 21st, will highlight a number of local marketing-driven organizations that are taking their results-driven marketing to the next level.  Each year the quality of entrants and competition for these highly sought after awards continues to rise.  This year’s winners truly provide inspiration for all of us to continue to enliven our methods and strategies for engaging our target markets.  This event will likely sell out, so please be sure to register early to ensure your space at the event.  There are also sponsorship opportunities still available to help you tell your brand story to the leading marketers in the region.

Also, make sure you join us for February’s luncheon on the 12th, there Nelson Pratt, Brand Manager with Regence, will discuss how to connect your marketing plan to sales revenue.  Register early, because January’s Professional Development event sold out and we’re expecting a near-capacity crowd for this luncheon, too.

Red is the color of passion and involvement.  It is also the color of AMA Oregon's high performance membership. Find and utilize your passion as a professional, and as a volunteer. 

 

Editor's Note

Red must be the color for February.  The buds on the camellia bush by my front door are swelling and tinged red.  Remember, that Valentines are red.  The tiny new shoots on my rhubarb crowns are red, too.  Of course, best of all, the carpet leading to the MAX ceremonies will be red.  So much red color portends our  times of great passion.

Indeed, Oregon marketers are passionate group.  Take, for instance, on Tuesday, February 12th,  we will both be hosting another fabulous Luncheon and speaker, and are also invited to a Super Bowl Ad party sponsored by our PSU Collegiate Chapter.  On Thursday, February 21st The Gallery of Entries, at the MAX Awards Ceremony, will be the place to see the results of professional marketing passion harnessed to do purposeful work on behalf of clients.  Be sure to attend.

Cyndi Johnson, our February Volunteer of the Month, is on the Community Outreach Committee.  She will launch her first committee meeting as a program leader at Girls, Inc Northwest.  Girls, Inc. is a local non-profit member of a national organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.  We also hear from our Collegiate Chapter at PSU again.  Eddie Ong, the PSU student President is inviting the whole marketing community to a Super Bowl Ad Party.  Don't forget, that their Golf Tournament is coming up in March, too!

So, you see that red is the color of passion and involvement.  It is also the color of AMA Oregon's high performance membership. Find and utilize your passion as a professional, and as a volunteer.

One common mistake businesses make is operating under the assumption that sales and marketing are two separate functions when, in fact, they are really part of a continuum. Portland State University's Collegiate Chapter
Super Bowl Ad Party

The American Marketing Association at Portland State University wants to invite the Portland Marketing community  to its annual
Super Bowl Ad Party on Tuesday, Feb 12th, 2008 at Henry's 12th Street Tavern from 5:30-9:00pm.

The event will include: pool, appetizers, no host bar, a viral ad-competition between PSU students, sponsored by Widmer Brothers Brewing, and viewing of ads from Super Bowl XLII. This event will allow attendees the opportunity to witness and support the creativity of PSU students in a relaxed social environment.

Henry's Tavern, located on the corner of 12th and West Burnside, offers a perfect setting for the event.
