President’s Message
My favorite time of year has arrived. In Oregon, many people wonder how I can look forward to short days filled with rain and holiday shoppers. I ask; how can you not? From the flock of meteorologists who excitedly show me the two inches of snow accumulation near Mount Tabor to dodging sugar-crazed children at the Lloyd Center, the holidays bring out a sense of urgency and hope unparalleled the rest of the year.
The holidays also bring about a sense of reflection. Did I accomplish what I wanted to this year? Did I reach my goals? Marketers are no different. As we near the close of the 4th quarter, the ultimate report card comes due. Did the business respond based on the marketing campaigns I executed? Did my spending lead to an increase in business? What changes need to occur for next year?
At the end of the year we find out whether we won or lost the game we should have been keeping score about the entire year; ROI. Our December 11 luncheon is focused on building tactical marketing campaigns that will improve ROI and customer loyalty. We are honored to have Kyndra Russell, Director of Field Marketing for Starwood Hotels (Westin, Sheraton, et.al.) sharing her experience creating and managing successful marketing programs nationwide. Her insight will be valuable to any marketer or manager held accountable for driving bottom line improvement through their marketing efforts.
Be sure to register early for her program to reserve your space. Last month’s attendance was well above 150 people and we’re expecting another large crowd this month. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming luncheon event.
Best –

Sponsorship Spotlight:
Spirit Media
Platinum Sponsor Since 2006
This month's Platinum Sponsor Spotlight is on Spirit Media, an Emmy Award nominated strategic creative agency headquartered in the Portland metro area. Spirit Media offers services in five core disciplines:
a.) Brand Consulting and Coaching
b.) Message Crafting
c.) Sales and Marketing Support
d.) Media Strategy and Development
e.) Event Strategy and Direction
Spirit Media's founder, President, and Creative Director is Bill Dolan. Bill got started in media in 1979 with KATU-TV and was directing a variety of promotions, commercials and live elements by 1981. Bill claims this was a golden era for local television. The economic realities of marrying his high school sweetheart and wanting to start a family caused Bill to pursue additional ways of generating income. After some unsuccessful business ventures, a friend asked him to apply his expertise in TV directing to a live corporate event he was producing. It turned out to be a natural fit and subsequent referrals around the west coast began building the business. In 1989, Bill incorporated Spirit Media in Oregon and California and three years later, Bill went full time with Spirit Media.

Volunteer of the Month
Congratulations to Andy Van Oostrom, the AMA's December Volunteer of the Month! Andy has been on our communications committee for two years, helping guide our e-marketing and web tactics as well as supporting other efforts such as the MAX awards.
Andy became active with the AMA two years ago when he joined eROI. As he said, "I knew that I had to develop my industry know-how, build a support group, and create my own list of strategic partners...I just seemed to find a nice place within the AMA."
According to Andy, volunteering was a natural extension of networking, and doing his "small" part seemed like a natural fit in a member-driven organization. He stays involved for many reasons and reminds us that "if you work hard, honest, and do right by folks, success will follow. One chance meeting, one nugget of knowledge, or one relationship from an AMA event has the potential to make a serious impact in one's life."
Beyond the AMA, Andy sits on the board of a political startup called DemocracyLab.org. He says his involvement is giving him a new respect for non-profits, startups, and the commitment required for their success - and that the AMA is no different, and there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes that goes into AMA events.
The AMA would not be the robust professional organization we are without Andy and our other outstanding volunteers. Many thanks, Andy!
Connect with Andy on LinkedIn, or browse his page of industry related resources (including the 4 eROI blogs and his Del.icio.us feed.)
